Collage Weekly Update for Jan1-6

"Soar" ©NKD 2008

Between my packed social calendar :) and the rather erratic internet service in Beirut, I find myself catching a few minutes here and there to check my mail and my favorite blogs. Hope you are all doing well (Bobbie and Deb, merci beaucoup for tagging me, and I will respond this week). In the meantime, here's my weekly updates.

Note:
If you would like to add a listing for a collage related event (open calls for submissions, challenges, exhibitions of note, etc.), please email me early enough and I will try to include the news in my weekly updates. There are no restrictions on geographical origins and/or locations for the announcements, just my aesthetic and/or personal preferences :)

This week's Illustration Friday theme is --- you guessed it--- "Soar," while The 2 Things Challenge is about "home/health."

Upcoming events for 2008/09 :
Collage Mania is accepting submissions now for its spring exhibit. The New Zealand-based Tenth Annual Collage Exhibit will be held during the month of April, please see the guidelines here. The French museum of collage, Artcollé, is calling for collage/assemblage submissions to be featured at its 15 th Salon International du Collage in Paris ( France ). The American National Collage Society has posted its deadline for its 24th annual exhibit to be held next year. The African Zimbabwe Harare International Festival of the Arts invites collagists and other artists to participate in its "Art on Purpose" project.

In the mood for some collage browsing? If you live in California, check out Nancy Goodman Lawrence's collage art at the VIVA gallery in Sherman Oaks (image on the left), and The Collage Artists of America exhibition at the Burbank Creative Arts Center happening now. Visiting Chicago, Illinois? Swing by the Union Street Gallery, take a look at the Midwest Collage Society members exhibit entitled "white on white."

And of course, do not forget Switzerland's long-awaited "exposition" of Max Ernst - In The Garden of Nymph Ancolie at The Tinguely Museum in Basel (sigh!).

It was fun checking out the exhibitions and seeing artist's work. But honestly, in my humble opinion I prefer your work to most of what I saw. I do like the work of Nancy Goodman Lawrence and found use of old maps very interesting. It gives a very nice feel to the finished work.

I miss you! But have fun and enjoy your time there.

I see an avenging angel hovering outside a very important building. Maybe a palace of a God? It is an ominous looking day in the city. Anything is possible. Thunder and lightning and God's wrath may strike. The angel is a harbinger of the inevitable, that we may be all doomed if we do not change our ways. Rima has a sticker that says "Coexist". I suppose it is time that we do.

Deef, heureusement que vous avez dit "reve" et non 'cauchemar" :)!! Merci, mon ami.

Bobbie, I agree that Nancy's work is technically intringuing. I am flattered by your kindness but I think I have a lot more to learn :)

irene, it is interesting that you see a religious iconography in this collage. When I finished the collage I was going to title it "Phantasmagorique Allegoric," I thought it was cute/appropriate. Then I saw the IF challenge and changed it to "soar."

And yes, I totally champion the fundamental princile of all of us living as one in this world. Will we ever learn??!

Glad you are busy and having fun, Neda. And lovely always to see a fresh collage of yours.

I haven't yet looked at all the links, but have to say, Neda, we love your work. Period. Full Stop. Nothing to add or justify.

P.S. Thanks for the two things plug.

Neda, I would be honored to be a "pancake" friend. Regards from the Northeast - how parochial that sounds (north and east of what and middle and east of whom).

Thanks for so much valuable information... How do you manage to get updated? Neda, will you apply for this paris museum? Do you have any references about how it works, if it is serious, etc? Well, maybe will speak it better by mail. In the meantime, have a great time at your promised land...
Yours
