Art Calendar Feb 3-10: Light, Leaf, Live

"Blinded by the light" © NKD Jan 08

Art is not necessarily the representation of the visible but of the invisible….
-------------------------------------------
Weekly Update: It’s not Penthouse nor Playboy…it’s the Booby Wall, an unconventional yet powerful way of coming together with humor and strength…. (Thanks Sherry!)

In the mood for inspiration? Illustration Friday’s theme is “blanket;” the ladies at the 2Things Challenge offer us a choice between "Day/Time" or "Night/Light." Heck, I might do both! (The above collage is one of my submissions)

In New York this week? Check MOMA’s Belgian born Jan de Cock’s installation exhibit “Denkmal:” The German word Denkmal, which appears in the titles of all De Cock's works, signifies "monument." However, in Dutch (the artist's native language) the expression incorporates two meanings: denk (to think) and mal (mold); ergo Denkmal=mold of thinking.

Another New York treat is a collective collage exhibition entitled "The Unmonumental Picture” at The New Museum. Eleven artists explore a variety of subjects from myths to social commentary through the use of collage images (check out Wangechi Mutu's work, sample on the left).

Across the Atlantic? You might be interested in Ivor Abrahams’ “By Leafy Ways”exhibit at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, UK. The artist takes a close look at the English suburban garden and the relationship between artifice and nature; the exhibition's name comes from a film Abrahams made in 1971 with sets made from toy garden kits and tear sheets from gardening magazines (quite kitschy if not catchy, I'd say).

Closer to home (Texas that is): Dallas is hosting the INTERNATIONAL FORUM FOR PROFESSIONALS IN THE VISUAL ARTS from February 20-23, 2008. It is the 96th Annual Conference of the College Art Association which will bring together more than 5,500 artists, art historians, museum directors and curators, arts administrators, scholars, and educators. Look forward to the best in new scholarship, innovative art, and in-depth discussion of issues in the arts today. Yeeha!!! Now, can you all get together and send me as your emissary there? Tee hee :)

Ce collage me fait penser, dans sa symbolique, au film "seule dans la nuit" avec la sublime Audrey Hepburn… Une atmosphère sombre mais qui laisse présager l'espoir. Amitiés.

Neda,
Once again you have blown me away. I LOVE this piece (there is really nothing you do that I don't LOVE)!

Also, many thanks for visiting my burgeoning blog. You flatter me with the comments you left. I have to tell you, your work and your blog played a huge part in my decision to start blogging, and you continue to inspire with every piece you create. Thanks so much!

I wish you could hear my responses when I see your work. Today it was an Oooooh! And I can feel another one coming on when I get a little further down your blog. All the pieces are beautiful.

Everyone knows your's is a first rate blog, Neda. However, sometimes I just come on it just to see the new picture of you on your homepage. Today's just blew me away. You look like a fashion model and your clothes are outrageous. Your hair appears to have changed colour too LOL!!

Beautiful collage - I will try to get to MOMA by next week. Less than a block away from where I work.

Brian, you have the vision, courage, and grace of a top-notch artist and I -- my friend -- am very happy to share in your creative world. This blogging experience has taught me so much, but most of all it has introduced me to many amazing artists like you, and for that I am very grateful. Thank you very much for your kind words :)

DebraAnn, I have the same reaction when I look at your creations, my friend.

Bev! It took me forever to get that look! Tee hee. you always crack me up!

John, are you serious?? can I go with you??? Pretty please??

Jin, je ferais tout pour le meriter! Haha..Tu sais, je suis tellement obsessive que je fais 2 ou 3 collages par jour (quelquefois 6 ou 7!). Tes mots me touchent toujours.Merci!

Wow, I like your clever interpretation on the 2 things theme..very outside the box and clever.
I love your greatest gift collage, it's warm and looks very 'love like.'
Glad to have you home again! I have been reading all the mailers that have come out and just loved your "hip' photo!

It's always a shame that I can't enlarge your collages to have a better look at them. As it is, I sit with my nose almost pushed up to the screen to have a good look at them. That shows you how much I like them and how intrigued I am by them.

This piece is incredible, and so different. I daresay this trip has helped you move into a new direction. I love the ethereal quality here, the fading in the space.

Thanks for all the art updates and links too. I will check them out!

Beautiful interpretation! There's so much to say about this piece, I don't even know where to begin. If this was hanging in a museum or my home, I know I'd spend hours looking at and never seeing the same thing twice. Very well done!
